Whilst working as a postman, Major Raymond Owen fixed chainsaws in his garden shed in his spare time. After establishing a loyal customer base Major expanded his repairs to other two stroke machinery. As the business grew, Major was joined by his daughter Deborah who supported him with bookkeeping.
Major was quickly on the move again in 1984 where he took up a lease in the middle of the town. With increasing demand, Major recruited his sons in law, David and Andrew to support with the continued growth of the business.
By the end of the decade it became apparent that a purpose built premises was needed to sustain the development of the business. Two acres were purchased at Parc Road, Penrhyndeudraeth and a 5,000 sq. foot premise was erected.
The ambition shown by the small team led to an agreement with global brand, Kubota where Major R Owen become main dealers for North Wales in 1986.
The business was incorporated in 1990 and moved to the purpose built premises in September. The premises has expanded to house 3 retail buildings including 18,500 sq feet of trading space, modern showroom, dedicated workshop, parts warehouse and office areas.
The small team of four soon expanded by recruiting local people, providing the area with career opportunities. Some of the team are still with us today.
Major Retired in 1997 and his son in law David is appointed Managing Director, with Andy taking on the role of Sales Director. The duo are supported by Debbie as Accounts Director.
The business expanded its product offering to include Global Brands Toro, Stihl and Honda, as well as extending the Kubota offering to include Construction Machinery.
After a decade of building the Major Owen Brand with a sea of Kubota Orange Tractors in Holiday Parks, Sports Clubs and Farms across North Wales, Andy is appointed Managing Director with David retiring.
Despite the Global recession the business comes out stronger and picks up a couple of awards along the way including “Professional Turfcare Dealer of the Year award” in 2010 and “Daily Post Achievement Wales: Medium Business Award” in 2011.
With the business stable and established, Major Owen employees 20 full time staff. Major’s youngest Grandson Luke Owen-Jones joins the business as a Workshop Technician after completing college. His youngest Granddaughter, Maddie Burnham, also joins the business in 2016 as Marketing Assistant.
The business continued to operate on a small scale during the pandemic. Whilst furloughed, Major’s eldest Grandson, Joshua Owen-Jones, supports the business’s finances by advising on cashflow and operations.
During the recovery, Major Owen expands its Kubota offering by taking on the Agriculture Range, becoming one of only a few Kubota full line dealers in the UK.
Joshua joins the company full time in 2024 as Strategy & Finance Director with Luke Owen-Jones promoted to Aftersales Director, overseeing daily operations.
The brothers are committed to protecting the companies proud legacy by leveraging technology to further improve operations and the customer journey. The improvements made in the first year saw the business scoop up 3 awards at the Service Dealer Awards including Overall Dealer of the Year, with Luke picking up the leadership award for his dedication and development of the apprenticeship program.
